A Brief History of Prominent Zonta Member:
Eleanor Moonie, Club of East Auckland
As the current President of the Zonta Club of East Auckland I am happy to provide a little background about myself. As an Aucklander I am lucky to live close to the beach and start most days with a quick walk along Eastern Beach. This sets me up for the day and is a good time to reflect and think about the day and week to come.
I joined Zonta around five years ago to be able to contribute to a service organisation and to provide another dimension to my life. I have enjoyed this very much and have made some very good friends. I stood for President to extend myself and my knowledge of Zonta and the international aims and have found this a steep learning curve over the first few months of this year. However we are moving forward nicely as a club with a new meeting venue and a change of night. As a club we enjoy the Service aspect in assisting in our local community with regular commitments each year and we are about to host our annual Howick Little Theatre play evening for our international contribution. I have found the friendship and camaraderie is a beneficial and important aspect of my Zonta membership.
I have been employed in an Executive Assistant/HR role for the past ten years with an outdoor power product company and this has proved to be a challenging and rewarding position. Providing support to a General Manager, along with the Management team, I also have an overview of the HR aspect of the company making this is a varied and interesting role. As a member of the management team the thing I do best is to make sure all runs smoothly! Prior to this role I held senior Personal Assistant roles for similar periods of time. These job skills help me in my role as Zonta Club President.
As a widow, my own family consists of three adult children and partners, along with their children (four grandchildren and another expected later in the year) and I am very lucky they all live in Auckland, with all of us being in the same eastern vicinity. Family involvement makes life interesting and we have some fun times, at present I am coaxing tentative first smiles from my nine weeks old grandson!
Outside of Zonta I have been fortunate enough to travel quite extensively which has always been thoroughly enjoyable and interesting. Hobbies include reading and I enjoy embroidery and sewing, particularly patchworking. Having also rescoped my garden last year I am finding this occupies my time too, but the results are certainly rewarding. Presently working full time this doesn’t leave much spare time, but retirement plans are in hand so more time is beckoning.
