Brief History of the Zonta Club of: New Plymouth
Organised by the Zonta Club of Wanganui, the Zonta Club of New Plymouth in Area 2 was chartered on March 20th 1992, one of six new clubs formed during the first biennium of District 16. On May 1st 1992, Governor Cherry Raymond made the Zonta Club of New Plymouth’s Charter presentation at a special dinner. Unfortunately the club did not thrive and, by April 1994, the three year-old club had dwindled to only seven members. Although the Area 2 Director, Margaret Coxhead, and Club President, Kim Gilkinson, tried to recruit new members and find ways of keeping the Club operating, existing Zontians decided that they would be unable to compete with a strong Soroptimist presence in New Plymouth and indicated that they were ready to fold. By July 1994, the Zonta Club of New Plymouth was in recess and officially disbanded in late 1994.
